The word sapphire comes from the Greek “sappheiros,” meaning blue stone. It’s no wonder that sapphires have been considered heavenly and powerful gems since ancient times. They were thought to suppress negative thoughts, bring good health, and symbolize nobility and faithfulness. Driven by their association with wisdom and truth, sapphires have enjoyed quite the literary esteem over the past millennia. They are mentioned 12 times in the Bible and pop up throughout Greek mythology and Egyptian literature. A 19th century French writer even centered them in a tale of underhanded adultery and intrigue.

Sapphires are among the most luxurious gemstones. The ruler who commissioned the Taj Mahal had a throne made of sapphires, which took seven years to create. This spectacular stone is from Sri Lanka, which is today one of the only steady producers of fine sapphires. The other two famous regions—Kashmir and Burma—have limited supply. In fact new Kashmir sapphires have not been discovered since the 1920’s. This baby hails from the last frontier of fine sapphires and we see why it is such a hot spot for the stone.
