There is overwhelming research proving that the color is blue is leading in the race as everyone’s top choice. We like to think it’s because sapphires are everyone’s favorite stone, and the favorite color vote is just a side effect. Next to diamonds and rubies in hardness, and unique in it’s most well known hue, a deep beautiful blue, sapphires are celestially exquisite.

The word sapphire has Greek origins from the word “sappheiros” meaning blue stone. The ancient Greeks also claim the story of the first sapphire and the god who rocked it. Prometheus, a Greek Titan who was credited for creating humans, actually had sympathy for those mere mortals. He watched them struggle with everyday life and begged the most powerful gods to at least let them have fire. Zeus shot that down pretty fast. Not discouraged at all, Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus, and bestowed it on mankind. Where would we be now without it?

Zeus was pretty mad about this betrayal, and chained Prometheus to rock to live out his days, tortured by an eagle sent by Zeus. A few decades later, after a lot of bonding with that rock, Prometheus was rescued by Hercules. Hercules broke the chains that bound him, and Prometheus was finally free. A link from the chain was still attached to his finger, and on the end of that, a chunk of the rock he had been by for so long. The piece of rock, that was now essentially his forever ring, was a beautiful blue color and was immensely strong- the very first sapphire.

Why Zeus would punish Prometheus by making him spend time with a huge sapphire is questionable to us, but we can thank Prometheus for not only giving us fire, but our favorite blue beauty. It’s no wonder as to why sapphires have been considered heavenly and powerful gems.
