Opals are endless in their intricate beauty. As mineraloids, they have a high water content of about 6-10% but no crystallinity like their translucent friends (diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires). There are many types of opals but the most popular ones are white, black, or somewhere in between. It all depends on the body hue and the play-of-color, determined by how the millions of microscopic silica spheres are arranged inside each stone. Some even think that an opal can glow without a lot of light to dance off its lovely face.
Most opals originate in Australia—over 90%, in fact. Millions of years ago, when Australia was forming as a continent, it was covered by a gigantic inland sea with a sedimentary basin, an ideal condition and climate for massive opal mines to start brewing.
This iridescent Aussie is on the lighter side with some sumptuous bright blue undertones. She is flush set in a fabulous Retro setting and elongated with rows of diamonds on either end. We love this powerful, swirly queen opal of the times.
