Turquoise can come in a wide range of bluish colors—from the most saturated azure, to a light robin's egg blue, to a green-tinged cerulean, and everything in between. Since turquoise often has veining—that dark spidery matrix often visible in rough turquoise—the pure blue stones are more rare and therefore more valuable. This kind of stone is not only hard to find but extremely difficult to mine as well. Deposits are small and can be hidden deep in the Earth’s crust, making it hard to access.
