If you are as obsessed with magnificent color as we are, then tourmalines are the stone for you. Tourmalines come in the widest range of color of any stone species in the world.
Tourmalines, along with opal, are October’s birthstone. The tradition of stones representing one’s birth month has been found in Hindu traditions. Called navaratna in Sanskrit, the practice of gemstones being linked to different celestial forces is present in sacred texts and aims to offer harmony and protection to the wearer. Multistone representation also has a rich history rooted in an important Biblical breastplate. But the modern iteration of birthstones extends back to the 16th century in Germany or Poland. Today’s birthstones were first set in place in 1912 by the Jewelers Association of America and updated in 1952, which is when tourmaline was tagged to October.
We love these pastel masterpieces—from the light, soft, and calming earthiness to the subtle yet rich hues of these stellar stones.
