Pearls have been known to humans since well before written history. It is an ancient, animal-made gem; rare yet found anywhere that mollusks exist.

Over the course of history, humans have told many tales about pearls. One German fairy tale includes the account of a count who encounters an old woman in the woods. She is carrying a heavy load and asks the kindly count to carry her heavy pack for her. He obliges and to thank him, she gives him a box made of emerald with a beautiful single pearl inside.

The count journeys on and comes to a castle where he meets a king and queen. He shows them the box with the pearl—and the queen faints! She recognizes the source of these wonderful gems: her very own daughter. Apparently the old woman lived with a princess who was banished by her father for not expressing sufficient filial piety. In addition to her untold beauty, this princess could cry tears of pearls. The king had grown remorseful over the years about banishing his daughter. With this lead, they go to rescue their daughter and live happily ever after—hopefully swimming in pearls.
