Zircon is the most ancient mineral that has ever been found on the earth. In 2014, gemologists found tiny zircon crystals on a sheep ranch in Western Australia that dated back 4.4 billion years. Those crystals, which had been part of a sand grain on a beach 3 billion year ago, provided a bevy of clues about the earth's birth. Fast forward to the Middle Ages when we first see evidence of zircon in jewelry. It was prized for its protective powers, shielding its wearer from plagues and evil spirits while simultaneously attracting riches and wisdom. Known as the "stone of virtue," zircon is believed to realign ethics and morals to universal truths. We can't think of a more worthwhile or noble reason to love a gem! 

Zircon is a prolific rock found in many geologic settings such as sand, sediment, and even in some cooled magma. While the vast majority of zircon is therefore not gem-grade, some stunning hunks of zircon are simply destined for fine jewelry.
