A killer bone Ankh that channels the magical nature of earthy adornment. It is unclear if we could be more hooked.
From the dawn of human existence, people have craved ornamentation. Bones and shells were among the first materials early folks employed to decorate their bodies. Using every part of the animal really meant every part, and bones—both durable and abundant—were ideal for jewelry because they could be manipulated by primitive stone tools.
Sharp stone edges, hard slate, and rough sandstone comprised the perfect primitive workshop from which people churned out bone jewelry. Bird bones, being small and hollow, could easily be made into beads. Snakes offered bead-like vertebrae of varying sizes. Huge hunks of bone, such as antler horns and elephant tusks, were grandiose forms of ceremonial adornment that could even denote a person’s position.
Since people believed that bones housed animal spirits, bone jewelry became associated with magic. But as humans put down roots in permanent settlements and began to raise animals, the need to hunt diminished. Bone beads became less magical. On top of that, humans started to specialize in trades and jewelry got more high-tech for the time. Bone was eventually replaced by stone and ivory in jewelry, and later metals and gems.
