The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, culture, and societal change. Philosophy, travel, science, art, music, and literature were evolving in Italy, and it soon spread across Europe where a new celebratory attitude was adopted, especially among the wealthy. After the economic destruction and general dullness of the Middle Ages, members of the upper class chose to invest in tangible wealth, and jewelry was an expressive way to so. New trade routes were taken advantage of to exchange gemstones and the European discovery of South America created an influx of gold. Fine artists such as sculptors or painters would collaborate with metalsmiths to create vivid and colorful jewelry designs.
And of course, rings were no exception. It’s said that Henry the VII owned over 240 rings! Antique paintings tell us that people of the Renaissance Era would wear rings on every single finger, sometimes in multiples. This golden poesy band was likely stacked with a gem encrusted ring, a staple in an expansive collection. Hailing from the 16th century, the white enamel work has faded over time leaving a unique softly worn texture. The only thing that rivals this band’s buttery beauty is the richness of its history.
