Sapphires make amazing presents. One noteworthy story featuring a gifted sapphire comes from Hindu mythology. 

The tale says that the god of the sea, Varuna, gave a once-in-a-generation sapphire to Lord Krishna, one of the most important deities in the Hindu tradition. What did Lord Krishna do to deserve this enviable stone, you ask? Just a little something called vanquishing the demon Narakasura, who was a tyrannical presence on both heaven and earth. 

Lord Krishna put the sapphire in his headdress in hopes that it would give him massive power and good fortune. The sapphire did just that.  The stone is said to have been possessed not only by Lord Krishna but other rulers as well. Where is it now, you wonder? The prominent gem is believed to be at the bottom of the sea from whence it came.
