Blue is one of the world’s favorite colors. But it wasn’t always this way.
Back in ancient times, blue had some questionable connotations. In Rome, it was a mourning color and, over in Europe, Celtic warriors painted their bodies blue before bloody battles. But around the twelfth century, the tide turned for the color blue.
One of the earliest champions of blue was a French abbot who saw blue as divine. The abbot, Suger of Saint-Denis, liberally used all kinds of blues in the reconstruction of a famous monastery outside Paris around the year 1135. Notably, he called for coloring glass with cobalt, a technique that was then used frequently across the country.
This 3.16ctw heavenly sapphire is a fine, deep blue. We see her as all sorts of divine. That exemplary sapphire is not the only star; 0.69ctw of chunky diamonds create a halo effect set in a glamorous platinum setting. A most remarkable marriage of blue and white, sparkle and depth, heaven and earth.
