Scarabs are a common symbol from ancient Egypt, representing rebirth and transformation. Found on every continent except Antarctica, scientists have documented almost 30,000 species of scarab.

Scarabs are a type of dung beetle, so named because they roll balls of dung, which often contain its eggs, back and forth. To the Ancient Egyptians, this movement was reminiscent of the sun’s movements across the sky every day. This meant a close association with the god Khepri, who represented the dawn and by extension, transformation and rebirth. Archaeologists have found several examples of Ancient Egyptian artwork depicting Khepri as a scarab-headed entity pushing the sun across the sky.

Given the scarab’s robust symbolism and protective qualities, Egyptians carved them on many forms of adornment, including semi-precious stones like lapis lazuli, as well as bone, glass, amber—and wood, like the scarab in this vintage ring. In addition to all this symbolism, scarabs simply look cool in jewelry. The intricate design and the sleek scarab back make for an interesting and eye-catching shape.

Set in a 14K gold ring and bracketed by whimsical rope motifs across the shoulders, this ring recalls Ancient Egypt while maximizing the craftsmanship and technology of the modern era for a cool and refined look.
