Meteors that hit the earth 2 billion years ago contained levels of platinum, but it’s known history of being a precious metal isn’t that long. Ancient Egyptians use it in a significant burial as hieroglyphics set into yellow gold, and ancient Incan cultures used it to make ceremonial masks and adornments, but it wasn’t until the mid 1700’s that platinum was acknowledged for the useful metal we know and love today. Spanish conquistadors even named it “platina” meaning little silver, and they thought it was just an inferior metal getting in their way of gold mining. Once the interest in alchemy was founded in Europe, scholars started to discover platinum’s positive properties. Platinum is extremely dense and hard, and is extremely resilient to corrosion. By 1803, a process for making this strong metal malleable was discovered opening the door to possibilities for its use. It would take another hundred years before jewelry was successfully made from it from none other than Cartier. Since then, platinum has been treasured not only for being one of the hardest metal options for jewelry out there, but it's incredible enhancement of the brilliance of diamonds.
