Snakes are one of the many longstanding and cool symbols used throughout jewelry history. The enduring and fluid symbolism of snakes is powerful and often shared across cultures. Representing fertility, protection, and transformation, snakes have been an important means of cultural communication over the course of many millennia. 

One of the earliest examples of snake jewelry appeared in ancient Egypt, where the snake was associated with royalty and protection. Pharaohs were especially obsessed, donning everything from armbands to bracelets with snakes for protection from evil spirits and safe passage into the afterlife.

In ancient Greece, snakes symbolized healing and medicine. Even today, the “Caduceus symbol” is used in conjunction with medicine. In fact there are two ways in which snakes have been associated with the medical field. One route was through Hermes who had a staff with two snakes that he wielded to protect and heal. The other was from Asclepius, the god of medicine who had a staff with two snakes. We don’t much care to pick a favorite as there are times that call for one snake, and times that call for two—or more! 

During the Victorian era snake imagery became super popular in jewelry design because it was thought to symbolize eternity, love and loyalty. Queen Victoria received a snake-shaped engagement ring from her beloved Prince Albert, kicking off quite the trend across the jewelry world. Art Nouveau’s love for nature and organic shapes meant this symbol stayed popular for quite some time, and contemporary designers could not be more on board.
