Sapphires are known to have the power to impart deep spiritual enlightenment and inner peace on those they touch. Perhaps that is why people have loved sapphires for millennia and on multiple continents. The Ancient Greeks associated sapphires with the sun god, Apollo. At the famous oracle at Delphi, sapphires were worn due to the belief that they are connected to the spirit world and are said to help people tap into their ‘third eye’.

Often called a ‘Stone of Destiny’, star sapphires were known to have mystical properties. The three cross-bars which traverse it are believed to represent Faith, Hope, and Destiny. As the stone is moved or the light changes, a living star appears floating across the polished surface. The star is the result of light reflecting off of three sets of parallel needle-like crystals of the mineral rutile, which intersect to form a six-rayed star. This phenomenon is called ‘asterism’ and it is rare, occurring in about 3% of all sapphires.
