Gems this good don’t come along often. We are enamored of this breathtaking, deep ocean goddess in all her sapphirey perfection—all 2.53 carats of her!

Though sapphires have been forged in the furnace of the Earth for literally millions of years, they really rose to their modern day prominence around the 13th century thanks to Pope Innocent III. Apparently Rome circa 1215 was a little like Vegas because this Pope felt the need to announce a rule instituting a mandatory waiting period to marry. The waiting period was said to stem from the belief that stones could indicate a person’s motives. An impure or unfaithful person would cause the color of an engagement stone to fade. Legend says that sapphires were the best for this kind of test. This tale likely came about around the time of the Crusades, when a woman’s betrothed was away for months.

For the next 200 years or so sapphires were the preferred stone of the royal and the wealthy as the gem retained its association with truth, fidelity, and love. When diamonds began to rise in prominence, the rarity of sapphire engagement rings made them a unique and desirable option for those with a keen, tasteful eye. And of course, the 20th century wound down with one of the most famous sapphire engagement rings: Princess Diana’s classic halo number.

This pure beauty reminds us of the darkening sky on the most perfect summer night. We could float forever in the depths of her safe, warm essence wrapped in the most buttery 22K gold.
