Pink sapphires range in color from soft pink to vivid magenta. But they never tread into the category of ‘too red’—because that would be a ruby. Sapphires and rubies are both part of the corundum family. Red corundum stones are rubies and every other color is a sapphire. Pink sapphires are pretty rare and increasingly beloved for their majestic beauty.

We set this 1.66ct natural pink sapphire in 18K rose gold, a most romantic metal. How does rose gold get its rosy, sensuous hues? Well, it all starts with the untenable softness of gold. Gold is so malleable that pure gold—24K—would be all but impossible for daily wear. That is why other metals are added for strength. The resulting metal alloy means more strength and also informs the color of the gold. Rose gold gets its gleam from the presence of copper; the exact color depends on the ratio of yellow gold to copper. More copper means more of that reddish rose undertone.
