I bet you didn’t know that there is a long and interesting history around the nut and bolt. But of course there is. Dating all the way back to the 7th century BC. Historical records show that an Assyrian king, Sennacherib, ordered the use of screws in the water pump of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the wonders of the ancient world. Greeks were using wooden nuts and bolts as long ago as the first century BC in the construction of wine and oil presses.

Metal nuts and bolts came on the scene in Europe around 1400 AD. Lack of standardization meant that they weren’t commonly found in the everyday Medieval toolbox but by the late 28th century, we had the machinery required to make these helpful little instruments. As the industrial revolution swept the land, more demand for machines, easier manufacturing, and better abundance of steel meant that the nut and bolt combo rose to the ubiquitous place it now holds in your Dad’s toolbox.
