The word beryl comes from an ancient Greek word, beryllos, loosely translated as "precious blue-green crystal". But beryl can be more than just blue or green. When mixed with elemental impurities, hues can include yellow, red, and pink. Without impurities, beryl can even be colorless and is known as Goshenite. Goshenite is actually far less valuable than when beryl takes on an interesting color because it’s not all that sparkly or as pretty as many other colorless gemstones.

Folklore refers to beryl quite a few times, showing its power to ward off demons and evil spirits. It was also seen as curative; Pliny the Elder used powdered beryl to cure eye injuries, while others used it to treat diseases of the heart and spine. Beryl could also promote happiness, youthfulness, and energy.

Emeralds are also beryl, of an incredibly saturated green persuasion. That’s right, the only difference between this pastel princess and her well known emerald counterpart is that emeralds are a bit more green, which results from a more potent mix of chromium and iron.
