Though it may sound unusual, it used to be pretty common for tuxedos to have buttons made of bone, especially during the early 20th century, which was the height of popularity for this particular frock. Bone buttons were durable and had a smooth finish after intensive processing and polishing, which really nailed the uber formal look that tuxedo-wearers want.
Well maybe not all tuxedo wearers.
In 1903 the Tuxedo Rebellion marked a particularly irreverent moment in the history of the tuxedo. Orchestrated by a group of mischievous college students in New York City, the group decided to wear tuxedos to a football game. This ruffled a few feathers to say the least—the students were even threatened with expulsion. Many thought that tuxedos were not good for daywear and saw the stunt as young men snubbing their noses at tradition and formality. The students could not care less. In fact, the controversy encouraged them to go harder, hiring a marching band to join them in their zany trek to the field. The students were not expelled and their team won the football game.
These earrings have an interesting history given their components and have been hand fabricated to look both antique and timeless. Each button is wrapped in a sensual frame of garnets. They reflect the formality of the buttons’ historic meaning while retaining the ability to dress down for thrilling football games at a moment’s notice!
