Art Nouveau jewelry embodies some of the most incredible craftsmanship in history. It was a time of righteous art and beauty, with jewelry acting as yet another canvas for the creative minds of the day. The Art Nouveau Era, from 1890 to 1910, saw stunning artistry and aesthetic ideals extend into many mediums.

Meaning “new art”, Art Nouveau marked a thirst for change, and put a primacy on skill. Art Nouveau overlaps with the last bit of the Victorian and the early part of the Edwardian Era. While materials, techniques, and preferences from each of those eras make many appearances, it has a unique flavor unto its own. That’s why Art Nouveau is more of a style than a span of time.

In fact, what really defines Art Nouveau is an intense emphasis on settings and metalwork, with the value of stones being secondary to creativity, style, and artistry. Diamonds were not the be all end all with interesting stones like aquamarine, opal, moonstone, and sapphire stealing the show.

With construction and craft taking the lead, soft curved lines and rounded embellishments formed the basis of romantic, whimsical themes that mark this stunning style. Many of the daring designs of the day were derived from nature. Flowers, birds, and butterflies appeared next to cameos and adornments inspired by the female form. In these ways, artisans sought to create a new aesthetic for a new age, pushing back against mass-produced pieces and focusing on broad experimentation and decorative arts.
