Australia is known to have the world's biggest and best opals. Since the country is blessed with this gorgeous and interesting looking stone, it is no wonder that the native Aboriginal people of that continent have stories featuring the gem. 

One story speaks to the very origins of the Earth. During the “Dreamtime” period, which is when the universe came to be, the Rainbow Serpent alighted to Earth riding a rainbow to bring harmony to the people. When the Serpent’s rainbow ride touched down on the ground, the contact from the Serpent’s magical vehicle created opals. As a result, some see the sacred opal as a gift from the benevolent Rainbow Serpent. This in part accounts for why opals have so long been associated with the spirit world, used in many notable rituals and ceremonies.
