Topaz is a dreamy stone—durably hard with brilliance abound. It has been regarded as a talisman in all corners of the world due to its healing, protective properties. In the Middle Ages, some thought topaz could enhance mental fortitude and make its wearer safer, especially on long journeys.

In addition to its worldwide reputation for protecting against a wide variety of problems—like emotional difficulties as well as fires and accidents—topaz was thought to give the gift of sight. In 1255, Saint Hildegard of Bingen, a Roman Catholic Saint, claimed that she could read scripture in the dark thanks to the luminosity of topaz. She was so struck by the effectiveness of topaz as a facilitator of sight that she thought it could even restore one’s eyesight. There are old records of her with recommendation for those having trouble with their eyes: steep a topaz in wine for three days and then lightly rub it on your eyes.
