The Art Deco period arose after WWI and continued until about the start of the second World War. The 1920’s in particular were a time of prosperity and celebration. Innovation and the arts were reaching a high. The jewelry industry took a sharp turn away from the heaviness of Victorian jewelry and the fluidity of the Art Nouveau era, instead favoring geometric pieces inspired by architecture and industry.

Monochrome was a favorite feature, especially when diamonds were the center of attention. But color wasn’t completely left out, though it did play more of a supporting role, outlining or providing a border for fabulous diamond cuts. Crisp metal like platinum and white gold were molded into clean and modern lines. Geometric shapes created from rows of sapphires, emeralds, and rubies were set in novel angular patterns.
