Gas pipe necklaces are made of interlocking strips of gold that fit tightly together. They became popular in the 1930s and 1940s when materials like gold were scarce due to World War II. Since each gold strip nestled into the next, no soldering was required, saving time and resources. 

Many of the famed jewelry houses released a version in the middle of the 20th century. Van Cleef & Arpels’ Passe-Partout could be worn as a necklace, bracelet, or belt. Cartier’s gold “gas pipe” necklace boasted well crafted conjoined gold rings. Many of the most amazing gas pipe necklaces have a hidden clasp, giving the illusion of unbroken continuity. During the postwar economic boom, precious materials like gold became more abundant. But people were not ready to give up the gas pipe design.
