Bombe rings are as delicious as their decadent namesake. Bombe is a French dessert that appeared on menus as early as 1882. Trendy for decades, the splendid confection is comprised of multiple flavors of ice cream, layered and frozen in a dome shape. Early forms of ice cream originated in the 1500s when chefs harnessed below-freezing temperatures for food use. This primitive pre-ice cream was mostly made of sweetened water. Skip ahead two centuries to when crafty confectioners found that stirring cream while it freezes made that smooth, pleasing texture we scream for.
Fancy molds were used often in the early days of ice cream, especially in the upper echelons of fine dining. And the bombe was quite a Parisian pleaser. Embassy records show that there were 16 types of bombe served in a one year span in the early 20s.
