It’s surprising how much we have in common with a 19th century Burmese ruler but we learned of one we could certainly get along with. King Mindon reigned for the better half of the 1800s, and was known as a just and able king. But even more interesting was his obsession with gemstones, especially sapphires and rubies. In 1859, Mindon has a dream that inspired him to move his capital to Mandalay. Legend has it, that he he buried mounds of sapphires and rubies under the foundation of his palace to ward off evil spirits.

Building his home on top of gems wasn’t enough though, he soon ordered thousands of pounds of gravel from the Mogok Valley. He rummaged through the rocks himself in his courtyard, looking for those red and blue beauties he loved so much.

We connect with King Mindon on the love for the hunt, and the way colorful stones sparkle. When we came across this fun Victorian ruby and sapphire ring, we knew he’d be proud. A row of rose red oval cut rubies sit on top of matching midnight blue sapphires. This ring exudes energy, and personality, all the while being a timeless style that’s fit for royalty.
