The Victorian Era was an important one when it comes to jewelry. It’s namesake, Queen Victoria, was probably the most influential royal figure in history to impact the industry. She wore lots of jewelry and promoted its worth and sentimental value. There was a change in the social climate and the jewelry market benefitted. People wore jewelry now more than ever, and for the first time in history, women overtook men when it came to the amount of jewelry worn. This may be due to the new widespread publication and distribution of women's’ magazines and the endless rotation of portraits of the Queen.

Mid 19th century, a plentiful diamond mine was discovered in South Africa. Around the same time, gold was found in California and Australia. At once, fine jewelry was prolific. There was an extreme focus on the gemstones used. While the metalwork of Victorian pieces can be beautiful and should not be ignored, jewelers’ had a particular focus of the stones, especially diamonds. Each piece of jewelry was handmade around the featured stones, and it’s easy to see why in this early Victorian diamond navette ring.

The diamonds chosen to create this incredible ring are a notably romantic cut. Rose cuts have a special glow about them, especially when they are foiled back. This ring’s rose cuts have a thin sliver of foil set behind them to increase their light reflection, originally made to sparkle in candlelight. Set in 18k yellow gold with French hallmarks, the icy white diamonds next to the warm natural color of the gold is exceptionally beautiful.
