“I have seen dawn and sunset on moors and windy hills coming in solemn beauty like slow old tunes of Spain.” – John Edward Masefield

The romance and seduction of Spain is not lost on us, and was also adored by our ancestors. While the country was in somewhat turmoil during the 19th century, it was taking a turn toward more liberal movements and political change. It’s considered a time period that changed everything for the Spanish people, an immensely important time in history. Romanticism and Impressionism art movements ruled the late 1800’s in Spain. We feel as though we can identify both in this beautiful solid gold Spanish fan pendant.

The symbol of the fan is a highly feminine one and its prominence in Spain lent itself to become a national emblem. The hand fan was a must have accessory of upper class women, with delicate motifs painted on them by hand. There is even a secret language on how a Spanish woman held her anabico. For example, a closed fan over the heart means “I love you”, while an open fan placed over the lips means “kiss me”.

This beautiful Victorian Era fan pendant is made of solid 18k gold with romantic enamel work scrolling across. The vibrant colors of the floral design alludes the art movements at the time, a cool contrast to the gold. When fully opened, lettering spelling España is displayed. We believe that this was a treasured souvenir from someone’s travels, carefully chosen for not only its beauty, but its tribute to its country of origin.
