There is an ancient Roman story pertaining to the origin of onyx. Venus was partaking in some mid day slumber, when Cupid came along and was feeling particularly mischievous. His version of a prank was to use the tip of his arrows to clip the Goddess’s fingernails. As her fingernails fell to the ground, Eros dashed away. Since legend has it that no part of a heavenly being can ever die, and Venus is the Goddess of beauty, her fingernails were transformed into an everlasting beautiful stone. This stone was onyx.

While any story involving fingernails is a bit strange, it’s no surprise that onyx is associated with beauty. Its deep and mysterious color is instantly alluring, especially when contrasted against a bright platinum like in this Art Deco stunner. A rectangular cut onyx is framed by a white diamond halo and structural shoulders. The center stone is smooth and striking, while the diamonds and settings are highly textured adding instant intrigue. The black and white pairing along architectural details is classic Art Deco and quite compelling if we do say so ourselves.
