There is a region of Myanmar, previously known as Burma, that has been revered as a holy place of gemstones since ancient times. While this area has produced a variety of stones, it is best known for the incomparable rubies found there. Burmese rubies have been cultivated in the Mogok area since circa 500 AD, and have distinctive color and purity. They emit a special glow, have incredible clarity and durability. The people surrounding the area they call The Valley of the Rubies consider the red gem to be a “desire fulfilling stone” and asking to see the most sought after hue, pigeon blood red, is like asking to see the face of God.
We were lucky enough to acquire an antique Georgian brooch boasting many spectacular Burmese rubies. In order to pay tribute to the original piece, we kept each ruby in its original form but recreated into something new. Not only do these rubies have that expressive Burmese red glow, but they boast the original foiled back settings that enhance those properties. Out of the components from the 18th century brooch, we designed a fixed amount of stud earrings. Each pair houses antique cut rubies in their pinched silver settings with modern 14k gold posts. We’re delighted that these Burmese rubies will be fulfilling desires for years to come.
