What You Should Know: Pendant can be worn on a necklace as well. Paste is foil back.

In the 1700’s, diamonds and other precious gemstones were all the rage. The problem was, only the very rich could afford such luxuries, but they were wanted by all. This created a unique market and jewellers were challenged to find an alternative material that was fairly priced, but still gorgeous. Luckily, Georges Frederic Strass came up with a solution- paste. In 1724, he introduced a leaded glass that had been polished heavily until it glimmered like a diamond into the French jewelry world, and it was immediately hit.

What was initially thought of as substitute for diamonds quickly became something lusted after in its own right. The high society citizens loved paste just as much as their diamonds and often wore them side by side. It made fine jewelry available to the masses, but still maintained that feeling of specialness when wearing something dazzling. This choker pendant was converted from a Georgian brooch featuring paste. Originally created just after paste was invented, this beauty was one of the most coveted pieces of its time. We’re pretty sure it's still coveted at this time.
