The rich color purple has l long been associated with royalty and nobility, and we’ve determined that traces back to the first infatuations with amethyst. The illustrious shade and previously rarity suited royals perfectly, so they claimed the gemstone (and the color in general) as their own. Catherine the Great favored amethysts and St. Valentine was rumored to wear an amethyst ring with an intaglio of Cupid upon it.

Until the mid 1700s, amethyst was considered one of the cardinal stones. Alongside diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, it was the most precious, rare, and costly of gems. During the Georgian Era, a mine in Brazil was found that decreased amethyst’s scarcity but not its beauty. This 18th century chunky amethyst ring is astonishingly beautiful. The stone pulls a vibrant royal purple and is accented by two collet diamonds set in silver. The 18k gold split shoulders leave slivers of negative space for the diamonds to really shine, while the amethyst is closed back in traditional Georgian fashion. A dignified purple piece fit for a queen.
