The ancient Persians had a certain saying that roughly translates to, “To escape evil and have good fortune, you must see the reflection of the New Moon either on the face of a trusted friend, a copy of the Koran, or on the surface of a turquoise.” They also tell the story of a man who thought he had broken a bone. Upon further investigation, he realized that his largest turquoise had cracked instead, absorbing the injury upon itself, leaving the man unharmed. There are countless other stories that attribute December’s birthstone as a protective talisman, often symbolizing courage, friendship, and good luck. Personally, we find turquoise to be a sign of joy- its vibrant color and smooth surface constantly inspiring a smile.

And smile we did upon the discovery of this 18th century turquoise and diamond band. Nine Persian turquoises en cabochon pull the perfect shade of robin’s egg blue, wrapped in textured 18k gold. Foiled back diamonds are set in silver, a common practice during the Georgian Era, creating an east/ west set oval halo. The turquoise are in an open setting, making the most interesting use of negative space while the diamonds add a touch of glamour and sparkle. Topped off with geometric detailed shoulders and a golden shank, this Georgian band is unique yet totally wearable, not to mention jaw-droppingly beautiful.
