Back in the 13th century, there was a theory that sapphires had a certain magic. It was thought that they were a sort of truth revealer, and if an unfaithful person wore a sapphire, the color would gradually fade away. This was so widely believed that Pope Innocent III set in motion a mandatory waiting period before marriage, presumably to see if a worn sapphire would lose its vibrancy. This thought process led people to associate love, loyalty, and commitment with sapphires for centuries to come. This was further popularized in the 18th century after a story entitled Le Sapphire Merveillance by Mme de Jenlis was published. The fable had the age old theme of a sapphire predicting one’s fidelity, but in the end was a love story afterall.

It’s perfectly fitting that sapphires make lovely engagement ring stones. The historical connection of love and promise is well suited to such a sentimental heirloom. During the 1920’s, sapphires had another surge of adoration, especially when paired with sparkling white diamonds. This Art Deco stunner has a gorgeous emerald cut sapphire center pulling the exquisite shade of dark blue. We were drawn to this piece for its unique “halo”- eight white diamonds in alternating sizes surround the sapphire with such playfulness. The split shoulders are set with smaller white diamonds, graduating into a platinum band.

We think this ring would make a beautiful engagement ring- all the necessary components are there, including immense beauty.
