There is no other time period like the Art Deco Era. It was a time of economic prosperity, technological advancements, and artistic rebellion. The same could be said of its jewelry.

In the time when names like Tiffany, Van Cleef, and Cartier ruled, jewelry was more than just another accessory to throw on. Georges Fouquet said it best in 1931, “Jewelry and gold pieces must be works of art while also responding to the same needs as industrial objects”. White metals, especially platinum, were used almost exclusively. The use of platinum in jewelry was a relatively new trend, only becoming normalized during the end of the 19th century. In 1924 the world’s largest platinum deposit was found in South Africa, only increasing the love for the bright, indestructible metal. During the Art Deco period, artisans had perfected the manipulation of platinum to create incredible intricate designs.

These designs were inspired by the art movements happening in cohesion such as Cubism and Futurism. Clean simple lines, simple geometric shapes, and a fearless sense of style were key elements in jewelry design. Women’s fashion also had a huge influence on jewelry design. The new slinky flapper-esque dresses of night time partying called for necklaces that complimented this new silhouette. This gorgeous Art Deco necklace is the perfect example of this. A platinum circle pendant of diamonds is astonishingly beautiful but not the only detail we love about it. The chain itself is reminiscent of the machine age qualities of the Art Deco era as well as the way it is strung between the dazzling old cut diamonds.

This piece would make an incredible statement necklace on a special occasion. A lovely 1920’s necklace that is both delicate and strong, classic and sexy, vintage and modern.
