September’s birthstone and one of our favorites is the mysterious and elusive sapphire.

Beloved for thousands of years, sapphires are one of the strongest gems that occur in nature, not to mention one of the prettiest! Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, once bequeathed the name “hyacinth” to the deep blue stone, which was later given to the flower of a similar color.

Ancient Persians believed that the earth sat on top of a gigantic great sapphire making the sky blue and during the Middle Ages, clergymen wore sapphires to symbolize heaven. We’ve always associated sapphires with the cosmos, and set next to sparkling white diamonds like in this ring, it creates the illusion of the night sky with twinkling stars. This Art Deco beauty is straight up heavenly. The stones are square in shape, and set into a geometric pattern, an undeniably popular aesthetic of its era. We love how this ring is almost a century old, but feels incredibly modern and beautiful.
